Member Bio

Siddhartha Krishnan is a sociologist by training. He is from the Nilgiris, a Western Ghatian hill district in the state of Tamil Nadu, South India. His conceptual interests are in the material and cultural aspects implicated in interfaces between the socio-cultural and bio-physical realms. His methodological interests lie in combining field with archival work. The high and low lands of the Nilgiris are his preferred geography of research. Given his conceptual and methodological interests, his current research on environmental change and its implications for pastoral resource cultures seeks to breach the boundaries between environmental sociology and environmental history, through an engagement with historical sociology. Post schooling he descended the hills to the coastal city of Chennai to obtain his basic degree, MA, and PhD. Having completed his PhD in 2004 from the University of Madras, he joined the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE), Bangalore, on a post-doctoral fellowship.
