Hongqiao Liu is a Paris-based independent consultant, researcher, and journalist who documents, investigates, and contextualizes the social, environmental, and governance challenges arising from China’s emergence as a superpower. Her award-winning exposés in the early 2010s played a key role in advancing China’s environmental movements toward cleaner air, water, and soil. Over the past decade, she has worked with diverse stakeholders to advance sustainability—from clean water to wildlife conservation and transitional minerals. She also serves on the advisory committee for the Institute for Policy Studies’ Global Just Transition initiative, and curates Shuang Tan, a weekly newsletter offering policy insights and human-centered storytelling on China’s energy transition and climate action.

A two-time TED speaker and recognized by Vox as a “visionary change agent” in 2022, Hongqiao has been a visiting fellow at the University of Oxford and the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. She obtained a master’s degree in international relations from Sciences Po, Paris, and is fluent in Mandarin, English, and French.
