We are excited to announce that Carson alumnus Gregg Mitman has received the award of Knight Commander, Humane Order of African Redemption (KC-HOAR) by the President of the Republic of Liberia in a ceremony on 24 July 2025, as part of Liberia’s 178th Independence Day celebrations. This award is one of the Republic of Liberia’s oldest and highest civilian honors and symbolizes appreciation and gratitude for outstanding humanitarian acts. Professor Mitman is honored for his decade-long research in the fields of public health and the humanities, which explored a multi-perspective view of pandemic threats and the intersections of ecological, economic, political, and social forces, as well as the colonial legacies and capitalism in West Africa, while amplifying Liberian voices and perspectives.
Among Mitman’s many accomplishments are his long dedication to justice-driven research, his motivation in global health advocacy and his lasting collaborations with Liberian communities, scholars, and institutions.
